So Tay is a much larger place than either Myst or Riven ever was with at least a moderate amount of literate or semi literate individuals.
Let's discuss various things that will affect what goes into these books. Here I'm speaking about plain, non-Art, literature books but feel free to describe linking books in this thread as well.
In the Wetlands development thread I suggested we add Outhouses with reading material in the out houses. I suggested state issued books that were more or less picture books designed to depict Myths, Legends History and Propaganda for the less literate. These books might include image panels similar to the stained glass-like images from Riven depicting Gehn's creation. When depicting the stories of Myst and Riven I thought it would be a nice touch if The Stranger character is depicted without a face similar to the way Muhammad is depicted, when he is depicted in Middle Eastern imagery. Bathrooms in Tay might also have hand drawn picture books from blank books about things that interest them or their daily life how they feel about certain members. i.e. less professional books that may make up a conversation of bathroom sitters. Might be drawn in by adults or children.
I would also like to discuss where books come from within Tay. Who is making paper? Who is binding books? Who has Printing Presses if we have them at all? How rare/expensive are they? How would a printing press influence the production of Linking books? I think it's established that you wouldn't be able to use a printing press to make descriptive books. Though that might be interesting to see Personal Island get-a-way as a cheesy knock off product that everyone has. Or a small floating spaceship house off in the void repeated adnauseum.
Mostly I started this thread because I wanted to talk about Marginalia. Marginalia is often associated with the campy images of monty python drawings put into the margins of handwritten, medieval bibles and things. But it plainly, Marginalia means anything written into the margins of a text. I think this could give a lot of insight into what is and isn't proper to print into a book versus what notes people make about the books they have. Perhaps alternate version of events are edited into books.
