So I'm back guys. Sorry for the absenteism. I've been dealing with a slew of medical issues for about six weeks which have been resolved as of this week, so I'm back to tackle the project.
Ok, so here goes...
Black Moiety as a concept is really really big. No, seriously, its really really big.
However, its also really really good, at least from a lore and world-building aspect. I think it has the potential to expand the Myst saga and bring it in entirely new territory while harking back to that feeling and aesthetic of the Robyn Miller days.
The question is "how to proceed?"
Chris Spencer, our resident modeller and project champion realized along with me that kickstarting a project of this magnitude without solid industry experience is a bad idea from a business standpoint. None of us are industry guys, however I myself am a writer with a background in Western Society and Culture and many of us have talents in worldbuilding and art.
However, what we need is concept art. We need to give a proof to Cyan before too much actual physical work is done in Unreal. We also need to find modellers and Unreal guys from outside the Myst community as well as within. This means advertising in places like Polycount.com and such. However, I feel nervous about approaching modellers without having created and sent the "proof" to Cyan and received approval.
What we need to do is discuss production avenues. How will we get this done? Kickstarter seems iffy without a solid industry experienced team and fan collaborations are always another option.
My idea was always to start a company like 59 Volts and arrange an agreement with Cyan to develop expanded universe Myst games with their approval while they focus on their own projects.
I know for one Cyan is aware of us, since Ryan Warzecha liked our Facebook page (which needs updating by the way). So I guess what I'm saying is its time to assess how we are going to approach Cyan, impress them with a solid outline and have a production method decided upon that we can propose to them that would seem reasonable to them.
So we have some options:
What do people think of the initial Kickstarter idea? Personally I think it was unrealistic which is why I'm looking in other directions.
We need to create a proof no matter what.. so what method should we use? Video montage? Huge PDF file with complete concept layout?
We need some concept artists asap, anyone know of anyone or how to recruit some for no pay?
Modellers and Unreal guys? Do we seek them out now or wait?
Business plans? Do we attempt an online fan collaboration method or do we opt for forming a company like 59 Volts? If so, in what sense? Is profit involved, albeit in a minor way? (I was always thinking of giving Cyan at least 50% to 60% of profits if they agreed to it). Personally, I have a lot of game concepts besides Black Moiety and would love to form a company that could develop all these concepts, but we'll see.
Brainstorming time!
