Hey all, Here is a thread for any aspiring musician or composer to post some demo tracks that they think would suit Black Moiety. Remember, we're going in a more earthy, atmospheric direction with tribal influences. It should be very mysterious and dark to fit with the shadowy nature of Tay and the Moiety. Use of maral obe and bells welcome for the more D'ni-centric tracks. Here is Hollister's submission: soundcloud.com/hollisterstarrett/black-moiety-theme-demoI'd suggest any artist pick a certain region or character from Black Moiety and develop a theme for it. Here is FoetusDream who is someone I'd like to recruit for some tracks. Definitely a vibe I'm going for: soundcloud.com/foetusdreams

Hey there! Here are my four first submissions for the project: Atauui Temple Loop: soundcloud.com/ogotu/atauui-temple-loop/s-hVXIRAshlands To Wild East: soundcloud.com/ogotu/ashlands-to-wild-east/s-wqXsWBlue Forest Blues: soundcloud.com/ogotu/blue-forest-blues/s-sRBN7Indigo Kachina: soundcloud.com/ogotu/indigo-kachina/s-s9UwUThe titles from the two first ones are pretty self-explanatory. The third & fourth tracks were made when I first heard that you needed potential music for the project, so I don't have a predefined location for them, but you can let me know if they inspire you or if you see them fitting for a specific location. That's about it, shows a portion of the type of music I can make, all while trying to stay within the dark & mysterious confines of the project itself. I'll be sure to post more as I keep making tracks. I'd be glad to know what you think of these, so don't hesitate to drop some feedback and we can always arrange something if you need me to modify the tracks; it goes without saying that these are first drafts ^-^ Thanks for the opportunity & enjoy! - Oskar

I made another theme, I think it should be closer to the aesthetic you're looking for. I made it tribal, but also very derivative of Riven (and even a little bit of Channelwood from Myst). I'd love to know what you think. Here it is: soundcloud.com/hollisterstarrett/black-moiety-demo-2

Oh wow!
These are fantastic!
The first one for the Temple definitely fits the Temple of Allatwan since it blends Moiety and D'ni religion into a strange oriental mix. Fantastic!
The second track is great as well, although I'd suggest layering some other instruments or percussive, maybe building up to a crescendo like you'd get on some of the Robyn Miller Riven tracks.
The third I actually hear somewhere like the Northern Wastes, perfect for the desolate black and blue hues of the north.
The fourth is effing incredible! Definitely a nighttime track. I can hear it in remote locations, specifically the Wild East, Crag, Northern Wastes or Ashlands. Actually this would be perfect for the Sacred Valley when approaching the Hive crater at night time against the smoky skies.
All in all fantastic.
One thing I would suggest for your next pieces is going for a warmer tone overall, bringing in some Riven-like percussives - something like Village Entrance Theme or Moiety Caves/Boat Ride/Jungle Totem. The warmer tracks would fit well in the less remote and cold environments.

I'd love to know what you think. Here it is: soundcloud.com/hollisterstarrett/black-moiety-demo-2The percussion is nice and it is warmer for sure! One thing is I found it quite fast. I felt it didn't have enough time to breathe. Its also a little orchestral in places which is nice but I'm not sure it fits with the more ambient and brooding feel of Riven and the Moiety. I'm gonna post examples of the existant Moiety music from Riven to give an example of our starting point. Of course Tay today is much different from what it was during Riven, so its palette has had time to evolve and incorporate other influences, like say D'ni instrumentation while developing its own style as well. I think its important to think about what kinds of music the Moiety play themselves and what kinds of instruments they use. Another huge influence is the work of Turjan or Alain Pachins and his Myst-themed bands/projects. This record in particular is a good influence.

Hollister, I'm re-listening to your first submission, and its amazing! Again, I would just play with the timbre of the main synth lead, maybe switch it into an instrument of some kind like a maral obe or you could try playing that melody on duduk just to see.

Ay, here's a new track. Stayed up until 4:30 am last night working on it and added some finishing touches today. Tried going for something warmer but it still sounds very night timely. However it definitely has a D'ni influence with a variety of woodwind styles, which is why I reckon it works well with the Rem/Shipwreck Coast regions. I also added some crickets for immersion purposes lol soundcloud.com/ogotu/rem-festival/s-9IHbCI could really use some external point of view on this one, I'm getting some tunnel vision on it. I think for my next submission I will focus more on percussive elements and try to grasp a more prominent 'heat' aspect (•▿•) - Oskar P.S: Great tracks Hollister!!

soundcloud.com/james-lightfoot/sets/moietyHere is a set of demos originally intended for the ill-fated ages of ilathid project. I am much better at production now though, this was almost a decade ago. I can create in this style with better production and EQ if needed by the project at a later stage. Also: Holy shit hollister, you have the myst sound down, what patches/VSTs are you using?! Very happy to collaborate if you're up for it. I have the ideas, just finding the sounds has been a challenge.

Thanks! Listening now. This is really good. Cave ambience I really like the melody, of course the synth lead is dated which is understandable. I'd love to hear this track redone with modern tools. Very Rivenesque! Very dark. Perfect for what I'm looking for. Confrontation would be good for a character scene, as in confronting a villain of some sort. Again would benefit from being redone. Haven is fantastic for the vibe I'm going for. I could hear this working well with some tweaking (making it thicker, updating the synth background.) Could work in the Hiva territory or the Wild East. Temple Ambience... oooo very Myst-like. Love some of the synth gong like effects which remind me of the original Myst soundtrack. Theme from Veegtara is cool. Love the drum accents and flute, again very reminiscent of Robyn's Myst Soundtrack. Would benefit from a modern remake with newer synths. Could work anywhere. Hollister, I'm re-listening to your second submission and I really like percussion. One thing I would do to make it work more with the tone of Tay is to try to avoid intricate orchestration. So going for a more ambient and less classical style is what I think would work for the feel of Tay. Hollister, I'm also going to use your first submission as Adann's Theme as I find it suits the character perfectly.

I see what you mean about the intricate orchestration not suiting tay, but it's a shame because that's some of the best myst fan music I've ever heard, loving those plucked strings near the end, lovely jack wall sound. If Hollister would be up for sharing sound libraries/vsts I think we could really get something going here.

Yeah I see what you mean. Its great music. I'm just trying to distance the feel of this game from Exile and Revelation and go for more of that creepy Riven feel since Tay is so tied to it thematically. Again, the subtext of the game is "Shadow of Myst" so shadows, mystery, darkness and intrigue are very important to the theme and feel of this game.
How about you three work together on a soundtrack and share all your libraries? I think that would yield good results.

Good idea, I can give that a go. (I'll see what I can do on my computer but I'm going out of town for a week so I can't record anything right now. ) Ay, here's a new track. And I know exactly what you mean by tunnel vision, haha soundcloud.com/james-lightfoot/sets/moietyHere is a set of demos originally intended for the ill-fated ages of ilathid project. I am much better at production now though, this was almost a decade ago. I can create in this style with better production and EQ if needed by the project at a later stage. I have the ideas, just finding the sounds has been a challenge. Thank you! I liked your tracks, (especially confrontation) but I see what you mean with the old synth patches. I actually use Logic Pro, and I make each patch on the fly. I have a sound I'm going for in my head and I just customize a default patch until I get it, so I'm not sure how useful they would be, especially because I believe Logic uses its own format. Hollister, I'm re-listening to your second submission and I really like percussion. One thing I would do to make it work more with the tone of Tay is to try to avoid intricate orchestration. Hollister, I'm also going to use your first submission as Adann's Theme as I find it suits the character perfectly. I understand about the orchestration, I thought it would be a nice undertone but I see you're going for an extremely ambient feel, even more so than Riven. As stated above I can mess around with the first theme, do you still want me to? How about you three work together on a soundtrack and share all your libraries? I think that would yield good results For reasons stated above I'm not sure how helpful sharing my library would be, but I highly recommend Logic Pro (or GarageBand, I used that for everything up until my first BM theme). But I'd love to collab with you guys, I like your music and it sounds like fun!

It features Ogotu's amazing music along with voicework by project founder Chris Spencer. Should be up in 10 minutes. Edit: ...and here it is:
