The clan concept is based on tribal Earth customs. Each clan takes a native animal as their symbol.
Here are the five major clans:
Here are the five major clans:
- Wahrk (Yes, the Wahrk was an ancient animal of reverance on Riven and surprisingly Gehn didn't manage to ruin it. Either Katran or Gehn wrote the animal into the Age and this is a fact often disputed. However the animal has since been reclaimed as a symbol of strength and majesty, thus being adopted appropriately by the richest and most powerful clan)
They hold the city of Ashtasa and have largely built the urban centers of the south due to accumulated wealth from agriculture in the Eleem Basin. They also operate the town of Cara in the Crag where tishi insects are farmed for their honey that is sold inter-Age.
They also have the largest military which is made up of loyal and crazed Moiety guerrilla fighters that will do anything for honor and recognition in the Clan hierarchy. They are also the Clan with the closest ties to the D'ni along with Rem. - Rem (Ink Beetle in Rivenese): The second most powerful clan. The only other clan to have bred royalty besides Wahrk and the greatest King of them all, Tasko. They are the most closely tied to the recent Moiety Guild of Writers as they farm the native Ink Beetles.
- Atam (Brown fish): The self-exiled clan which has returned to nature so to speak in the western jungles. They live in thatched mud huts amid the bogs and hunt the native wildlife with agility. They possess an animist religion and philosophy, choosing to not partake in the clan council in Ashtasa despite being one of the largest clans. They are normally hostile towards outsiders with the exception of those who can earn their trust (i.e. Yeesha)
- Hiva (Sunner in Rivenese): They live between the Dividing Range and the Western Jungles and Crag and live in adobe villages built out of the grassy marshlands. A merchant clan, they are well known farmers of native produce to the area. Also one of the most abused clans in Moiety history.
- Ytram: The northernmost clan who live out in the barren grey wastes of the north shore. They either live in port towns which are whaling havens or in the desert caves where Ytram poison is harvested for both the clan's purposes and to be sold down south and inter-Age.
- Squam: Taking their name from the native Moiety creature seen encircling the Hive, they are found in the Wild East among the Gapoto forest villages. They are agile spearmen who hunt the squam for both ritual and nourishment. They are often in conflict with neighbouring clans of lesser prominence.
- Irdu: Not much is known at the moment about them, but they are also of Eastern origin and are in close conflict with clan Squam.
- Kalape: Riverlands clan taking their name from a pelican like creature seen in the Moiety link-in chamber on Riven. They are tree dwellers, building homes out of the base of tall jungle trees and building walkways across the canopy. In conflict with Clan Wahrk over agriculture and fishing in the great rivers pooling into Lake Eleem.
