Also, welcome.

Hello! My name is Hollister and I'm a diehard fan of the Myst games. I'm currently a developer, actor, and the composer for Ages of Ilathid, another Myst fan-game. I'm very interested in this project, in fact, I had the exact idea for a fan-game a few years back, and am extremely excited to see that I'm not the only one who wants to see Tay fleshed out and developed. I'm curious as to what you are planning to do in regards to music? If you're looking for someone, I'd absolutely love to be a part of this project, and I hope you'll consider me. Here's an unfinished version of the main theme for Ilathid.

Huh, Two major Myst Fan projects revolving around Riven? I never expected to find other people that love the Myst series this much in this day and age.
I am Gedab (or Luke, whatever floats your boat). I found this site through the Starry Expanse webpage and just HAD to see what this was about. And I gotta say, I am 100% supportive of this project. Riven was given a lot of attention both in the Books as well as the game yet at the same time there isn't all that much known about Riven and its denizens as a whole. I am glad that there is someone who wants to expand the lore of Riven.
As for what I can contribute... Sad to say, I don't have much to offer. I am a fledgling 3D modeller/animator, and that's about it. However, I WILL follow this project closely to see how it unfolds and would be happy to help in any way I am able.

Awesome guys! Glad to have you here. Riven is definitely a cult classic with Slayer-level dedication and obsession.

I'm excited to see what progress you've made! And please do let me know if/how I can help. (Still wondering about your plans for music)

For music we're considering this guy: soundcloud.com/foetusdreams We're already using some of his tracks as test tracks in-game. Hollister, do you have a sample of your work?

Sure do, I provided it in my last post. Please note that nothing I have on my SoundCloud is a finished product, and hence not entirely polished yet. (I mostly use SoundCloud to demo ideas for themes)

Ah ok, sorry that was a while back. Should have checked the thread.
Sonically we're looking something quite somber and ambient with a lot of tactile-sounding percussion. So drums, wooden timbres mostly, bells and harsh chimes for anything relating to the D'ni. The soundcloud of the guy I linked gives a good impression of the style we're looking for. I'm not sure of his availability though so we may request other composers or a multitude of composers.

The Ilathid theme is definitely more in the style of Myst III/Jack Wall, since the game takes place around the time of Myst III. You're probably looking for something stylistically closer to the Riven soundtrack, right? I liked what I heard from the demo videos I saw, and I assume that was foetusdreams' work. But if you do need someone else/extra, let me know and I can pitch you something more in the style you may be looking for.

Yeah for sure! I really liked your use of violin in that track by the way. Very emotional and theatrical. I was thinking Myst III as well.
The demo videos had a mashup track I made myself remixing the Skywind Sixth House music with a lowered-pitch Village Entrance Theme. It turned out amazing!
Maybe you could do a demo track for a region on Tay? Go to the About page and our concepts thread and pick a region and create a 4 to 5 minute track in a more Rivenesque style (i.e. creepy, dark, somber, mysterious, ambient.) I give you free reign to try anything out that you think would work.

That's what I was going for, I'm glad it conveyed! The demo videos had a mashup track I made myself remixing the Skywind Sixth House music with a lowered-pitch Village Entrance Theme. It turned out amazing! Ah, I see! Well it sounded good. Maybe you could do a demo track for a region on Tay? I may be blind, but I wasn't able to find the About page and the only scenic concept art I found was this one (which is really cool but doesn't show off much environment). I think I'm just dumb and missing something. Would it be acceptable to base something off of the most recent walkaround video?

Here it is. Let me know what you think. I'm going to let you decide where this theme fits, and see if it's the same as where I had in mind.

That's really good! One thing I would work on is getting a more "earthy" feel with the timbre. The composition is definitely amazing and your layering is great, however I was put off a bit by the tone of the synths which had a kind of more clean/ghostly/sci-fi sound. One thing that we want to prominently feature is drums and anything with a warm, wood-like sound, along with bells for the D'ni-centric themes. Think Village entrance Theme from Riven or the Moiety Caves track. Still debating on whether or not to use maral obe, but I'm leaning towards yes. I would avoid the duduk since its overused personally.
I'll start a music thread shortly.
