Post your ideas on Moiety culture! Anything that's in your head. Customs, music, foods, art... etc How do you think the Rivenese have evolved since Riven?

This is an interesting question. I think it needs to be broken up a little more. Certainly there will be a greater historical culture but with each new clan there are more and more unique bits. There were really 2 clans before they even came to Tay; Supporters of Gehn(These guys were evacuated right?), Supporters of Katran. It might do to have seperate threads like this for each clan. definitely keep this as a greater cultural discussion.

I think of all the cultural components that weren't explained in Riven, I was most baffled by the clothing. I understood where Gehn's clothes came from, But the rivenese didn't seem to have a fabric source. They clearly didn't keep anything in the way of grazing livestock. That leaves 2 options. Either they had a plant source or an ocean source. All the Rivenese I think I had seen were covered shoulder to toe in thick fabrics. It might be possible to assume that they were getting the fabric from an aquatic plant as that seems to be a place where the was room for abundance of such a thing. They seemed to be an ocean dwelling nation. Lets assume they were surrounded by salt water. They had time to start a civ in Tay before Riven collapsed. They would have had time to bring plants and animals over the link. Bringing and aquatic textiles plant to germinate would have posed serious problems. could they get it to grow in the wet lands or could only coastal nations build this sort of agriculture. In the places they couldn't get it to grow a replacement would eventually be found. this would be a good way to mark the difference between inland and coastal tribes.

Small suggestion. Shot in the dark. Ok so lately I've had an interest in American Sign Language as a form of Dance. There was that youtube video a couple of months ago of a woman ASL dancing to Eminem's Lose Yourself. There are others but Dance as a form of popularization and education about a language like that has tickled something for me. I really have no other reason to be interested in ASL. youtu.be/dEtm_Q2LK9gThe Stranger never says anything in the series. What if they're mute? The Stranger is geographically from Earth-Amecia. It might be an interesting reason for ASL to show up in Tay. India has a very detailed hand movement meaning correlation in it's own traditional dance. Perhaps ASL found it's way into the dance culture of Tay and is maintained by an extremely small population of deaf people. Could be an interesting facet of in game puzzle/lore. the muteness of the character would line up with the example of the 'hole plug' religion of the golden page I was discussing in the Tech thread. In this example The stranger messiah has come to plug the hole of Riven, while saving the people. He says this or that to Gehn and Atrus depending on who is being demonized. In the future other strangers will arrive if the golden page doesn't properly maintain the age. The Strangers are manifest protectors of the fabric of reality. either it's the same one every time or each unstable age will produce a unique stranger. The stranger only shows up when a population of the age is in trouble. The golden page might extremely fear that their experiments might call one in on ages where they are intentionally destabilizing the age for study. This is more of a passing fancy I felt I needed to write down to vent it from my system than an actual suggestion for the game.

Thinking about clothing features of a wetland farming culture. imgur.com/OpPSk9O Vest and short sleeves woulod be the easiest to keep clean in high water. Vest thing Is sort of inspired by this sleeve thing that goes over the top of Aeon Flux's tanktop imgur.com/LFfANKlI also like the idea of using large broad leaves as clothing imgur.com/VOpanQn. This image is a little over the top but I think we could take brown dried leaves as a sort of hood. Maybe one largest leaf would be better than the multiple seen in my sketch. The other thought of leaves in the clothing is the fringe off the back of the cape or cloak. I thought the cape would be useful farming protection against the sun. The fringe off the back would drag over the top of the waters surface instead of submerging. The cape would probably still get wet but hopefully not take up As Much water or get tangled below the surface. also provides a focused path for water to drain after leaving high water. Boots are a similar feature. left boot is leaves wound in a latitudinal direction and hardened with resin. The right boot is a roman sandal looking thing with more protection extending around the side of the foot and leaving the top exposed. shoes under water like this probably need to mostly protect from kicking unseen rocks and they need to drain and dry quickly.

Yes, that is a good idea! One thing I had in mind was straw cone style hats sort of like what Chinese rice farmers wear. There are all sorts of clothing variations we can work out actually.
One thing that would be useful would be quick thumbnail character sketches, 20 on a page maybe or in photoshop. That way we can brainstorm on basic visual concepts for the Wetland culture.
Also, how about straw clothing... as in clothing literally made out of dried out grass? Thoughts to consider.
We still have to get some concept painter talent on board. Do you have any idea where to find Riven fan artists who would be willing to volunteer?

So I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but since I don't seem to be able to create a new thread I'll just post this here. I get that I'm new here and I have no intention of stepping on anyones toes or getting in anybody's way but I have a few basic ideas about the design of locations for Clan Atam. I'll post a more if any one can let me know if this is the right place and if there is any interest.

Sure! Glad that someone is taking an interest in the world I've developed. Clan Atam is very tribal, religiously animist in a way similar to shinto, their dwellings are mainly made of local materials like mud, wood, straw, leaves and they tend to have small villages that are deeply nestled in the jungles rather than large towns. For the geography and flora of the region, I'm really aiming for shades of Dagobah. Murky, rainy, dark in places with giant bulbous trees and slug/serpent-like predators that dwell in the bogs among many other forms of fauna.
